What Coffee Goes Best with the Stroopwafel?

If you grew up in the Netherlands, you’d already have an answer to this question.  Assuming you didn’t, let’s talk about which coffee is best for stroopwafel.

There is a reason this is important.  The best way to warm up this delicious Dutch treat is to place the round treat on the top of your coffee cup.  As your coffee cools, the Stroopwafel is steamed, making the caramel gooier. Then, as is your custom, you can dip it into the coffee or simply gobble it up between sips.

Types of Coffee

Black Coffee

Diehard traditionalists will swear by black coffee as the ultimate pairing with the stroopwafel. It’s easy to see why.  The richness of the coffee provides the ultimate contrast to the sweetness of the famous Dutch cookie. 

Black coffee drinkers will point to the fact that true adults like their coffee black, and the stroopwafel is an adult treat.  That may seem like saying doughnuts are only for grown-ups, but the stroopwafel has that effect on people. Delicate and aromatic, it seems too refined to hand over to a kid.

Coffee with Cream

You’ll get some strong arguments about what’s better if you talk to someone who prefers milk in their coffee when they have a stroopwafel.  The thinking is very simple and very logical.  Cookies go best with milk. However, since we aren’t children, then the milk goes in the coffee. 

This is an old-world view of the famous cookie. These coffee drinkers are happy to admit that children love the treat. However, they would be the first to point out that stroopwafels have a sophistication that puts them at the top of any hierarchy of sweets today.  

Coffee, Two Sugars

There are those with a sweet tooth who simply will not agree to the other alternatives.  They will have to sweeten their coffee before they dig into their stroopwafel. The combination of sweet coffee with the stroopwafel is just the perfect pairing, they’ll tell you.  

These coffee drinkers may have had stroopwafels once or 1,000 times, but they have never failed to enjoy the excitement of this Dutch treat. They aren’t worried about their image in the eyes of other adults. They can have their coffee with two sugars and still enjoy their stroopwafel. They answer to no one.

What’s the Verdict?

So, how do you want your coffee with your stroopwafel?  There’s no wrong answer. The only requirement is that you take a moment while your stroopwafel is warming up atop your coffee.  This moment of reflection is just what you need to ensure that you will savor the first bite of your stroopwafel.
