The ice cream sundae is a favorite across the country, and we’ve been paying attention. Here’s what we discovered is delicious and downright decadent. And, of course, our recipes call for delicious stroopwafel and snippers. It’s a Dutch twist on an American favorite.
Making a Mountain Out of Ice Cream Sundae Ingredients
We can’t start this discussion about sundaes without talking about the ultimate ice cream sundae mountain. To make it you will need two scoops of ice cream per teen or adult. This recipe, which suggests 19 scoops of ice cream, should serve 5 to 9 people.
Growing up, we’d have everyone eating off the mountain in a contest of siblings and cousins. Due to Covid concerns, we know we can’t eat it that way. So, you will want a bowl for each person. You might have several large spoons to allow for people to claim their portion. Make sure there are no ‘double dippers’ if people return for more.
Ingredients & More
- A minimum of 8 stroopwafels or a bag of snippers.
- Preferably you will use a variety of ice cream types. Of course, you can use frozen yogurt, non-dairy ice cream, gelato, or sherbert.
- Chocolate and caramel sauce (softened for pouring, but not hot)
- Colorful toppings such as sprinkles, M&Ms, and berries
- Ice Cream Scoop
- Platter with sides (A large plate will do, but it is good to have more room around the mountain where you can put extra candy and berries. Plus the sides help the ice cream stay on the plate.)
Favorite Tricks:
- Don’t take ice cream out of freezer until you have everything you’ll need
- Rinse the scoop in hot water between scoops or flavors.
- Let the kids (or guests) help. Building this mountain is almost as much fun as eating it.
- Plan on serving this as soon as it is assembled!
How to Build a Big Ice Cream Sundae Mountain
Step 1: Break up 8 stroopwafels into smaller pieces.
Step 2: Make the bottom layer of the mountain by scooping out about nine different colors/flavors.
Step 3: Lay out stroopwafels (about six) to make a new “floor”
Step 4: Drizzle caramel sauce across the stroopwafels.
Step 5: Make the next layer smaller, scooping out six different colors/flavors.
Step 6: Layout stroopwafels (about 3) to make a new “floor”
Step 7: Drizzle chocolate sauce across the stroopwafels.
Step 8: Make the next layer with just three scoops of different colors/flavors.
Step 9: Finish it off with one colorful scoop.
Step 10: Add more chocolate or caramel sauce. You can heat the sauce, but the ice cream will melt very fast.
Step 11: Sprinkle it with stroopwafel snippers and candy sprinkles (for kids) or M&M’s (for kids and adults) or berries (yum!). The goal is to make it as colorful as possible but also as delicious as possible.
Step 12: Serve!!
How to Make an Ice Cream Sundae Sandwich
This is one of the easiest ice cream treats you can make, and the kids will love them. With the right ingredients, you could even make the adults drool. If you make it this way, you’ll have a “sundae” with five flavors or more. Yum!
The most important thing about this snack is to allow an hour or more for the sandwiches to “set” in the freezer.
Ingredients & More
- Stroopwafels (2 per sandwich)
- Vanilla ice cream, non dairy ice cream, or frozen yogurt
- Sprinkles or thinly grated chocolate
- Your choice of berry jam, thick chocolate sauce, or both
- Plastic wrap, baggies or foil
Step 1: Put the ice cream on the counter to get soft.
Step 2: While you are waiting, layout your stroopwafels and put a thin layer of jam on each one.
Step 3: Then put a thin layer of chocolate sauce on each one.
Step 4: Put a scoop of ice cream between two stroops and slowly push the cookies together to make the ice cream even inside.
Step 5: Roll the sandwich in the grated chocolate or sprinkles.
Step 6: Wrap up the sandwich and put it in a safe place in the freezer.
Step 7: Give it at least an hour, if not more, before you serve them.
Straight-up Stroopwafel Ice Cream Sundae
Last, but not lot least, we thought we’d tell you why a stroopwafel is so good in a sundae. When you pour a little hot sauce on the stroop, it heats it up enough to make the inside gooey. That’s why it is the best thing to add to your sundae. We also love to put snippers on a sundae. Either way, you’ve got some good stuff to serve yourself, friends, and family.
Step 1: Add two scoops to a bowl or tall glass
Step 2: Divide stroopwafel into rounded triangles.
Step 3: Surround the ice cream with the triangles.
Step 4: Pour hot chocolate sauce over that.
Step 5: Add berries, chocolate pieces, or sprinkles.
Step 6: Enjoy!
Now that we’ve gotten you thinking, order some fresh stroopwafels and build a mountain – or at least a sundae!!
